AetherCut's voiceover tool generates studio-quality narration from text. It uses ElevenLabs' `eleven_flash_v2_5` model — the same model used by major podcast networks for AI hosts and audiobook narration. 60+ stock voices, plus voice cloning if you upload a 30-second sample of your own voice for personal use.
Honest disclosure: this is one of the AetherCut features that genuinely uses an external API. The text you type is sent to ElevenLabs to synthesize. The audio comes back, is dropped onto your timeline, and you continue editing locally.
If you'd rather not use an external API for voiceover, AetherCut's Privacy Mode toggle disables this tool — and you can record voiceover the old-fashioned way with your microphone directly into the timeline, fully offline.
What's actually sent and what isn't
Only the text of your voiceover line and the chosen voice ID are sent to ElevenLabs. Your project, your other clips, your timeline state — none of that touches their servers.
ElevenLabs returns audio, which AetherCut drops onto your timeline as a new audio track. You can re-time it, ducks it under music with the Audio Ducking tool, or chain it through Studio Sound for broadcast polish — all of which then run locally.
Voice cloning
Pro users can clone a voice from a 30-second sample. The sample is sent to ElevenLabs once, creates a stable voice fingerprint, and from then on you can synthesize new lines in that voice without re-uploading.
ElevenLabs' published policy requires explicit consent for any voice you clone. AetherCut surfaces a one-time consent checkbox when you initiate a clone job. We do not support cloning anyone else's voice without their consent.
Cost
AI voiceover is metered roughly at $0.18 per 1,000 characters of text (ElevenLabs' published price for the flash v2.5 model). A 60-second voiceover typically lands around 200–250 words ≈ 1,200–1,500 characters. So most voiceover lines are pennies.
Pro includes a monthly voiceover credit that covers most creators' typical usage. Beyond that, additional credits are available at-cost.

Does AI voiceover work offline?
No. ElevenLabs is a server-side API. You'll need an internet connection to generate a new voiceover line. Editing existing voiceovers and the rest of the editor work normally offline.
Can I clone any voice?
No. You can clone your own voice. Cloning someone else's voice without their consent is not supported and ElevenLabs' policy prohibits it.
